About SMART (Self-Assessment for Measuring & Addressing Racism Tool)

SMART is a multi-domain organizational self-assessment tool designed to assist behavioral health organizations in reviewing their internal processes, programs and services in order to create more equitable practice settings for patients, providers and administrators.

First developed by AACP Board Members in 2020, SMART is the only anti-racism self-assessment tool designed specifically with the behavioral health workplace in mind.

An updated version of SMART was released in March 2025. The tool and its instructions can be accessed below. AACP is collecting feedback on the updated tool. Please remember to complete the feedback survey embedded at the end of SMART.
